Tips for Caregivers: Dementia

Dementia is a progressive brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to think, communicate, and carry out daily activities. It is characterized by a decline in cognitive function, memory loss, and changes in behaviour and mood. Dementia can be caused by various factors including brain damage due to stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. It can also be caused by exposure to certain toxic substances or chronic health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
 
Common Signs and Symptoms include:
 
Cognitive changes:
 
  • Memory loss, which is usually noticed by someone else
  • Difficulty communicating or finding words
  • Difficulty with visual and spatial abilities, such as getting lost while driving
  • Difficulty reasoning or problem-solving
  • Difficulty handling complex tasks
  • Difficulty with planning and organizing
  • Difficulty with coordination and motor functions
  • Confusion and disorientation
 
Psychological changes:
 
  • Personality changes
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Inappropriate behaviour
  • Paranoia
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
If you, as the patient’s caregiver, notice any consistent changes or signs as mentioned above, it is important to report them, so that your patient can get checked by their medical doctor and the correct medication can be prescribed.
