What Should You Do to Stay Healthy This Winter?

Drink water
Winter may be a good time for hot cocoa and cider, but water should always be your drink of choice. While warm beverages are great for staying cosy, it is important to balance them with enough water throughout the day.

Aim to drink at least eight cups of water daily. Having a glass of water with and between meals helps keep you hydrated, supports your immune system, and prepares your body to fight off common winter germs.

Stress less
Mid-year holidays and travel can be stressful, which is not how you should feel during the colder months. Try to focus on activities that bring you comfort and joy, rather than worrying about everything that needs to be done.

Sleep enough

Dress warmly

Keep an eye on weather forecasts and windchill warnings and dress appropriately. Watch for signs of frostbite, such as red or pale skin, prickling, or numbness.

Seek emergency medical help immediately if you experience symptoms of hypothermia, including intense shivering, slurred speech, loss of coordination, or extreme fatigue. Older adults should avoid prolonged exposure to cold whenever possible and take extra precautions, especially when travelling.

Exercise
It is easy to let exercise habits slip during winter, but staying active is important for both physical and mental health.

Workout apps or online exercise programs can help you stay active from the comfort of your home. Simple activities such as walking on the spot or chair exercises are excellent options for senior family members.

Keep the germs away
One of the best ways to prevent illness during winter is simple: wash your hands regularly. Germs accumulate on nearly everything you touch, making handwashing essential.

Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, making sure to scrub all surfaces thoroughly before rinsing well. Some doctors also recommend the flu vaccine, though this is a personal decision.
